Global Oceans and Fugro to Facilitate Modular Seafloor Drills for Scientific Coring

April 1, 2016 – Global Oceans (New York, USA) and Fugro (The Netherlands), have formed a strategic alliance to develop and deploy a long-term program for utilization of Fugro’s innovative modular seafloor drilling systems known as SFDs for scientific seafloor coring. This strategy aligns with Global Oceans’ objective of enabling utilization of commercial sector resources for scientific research, especially where they are facilitated by deployment from science-adapted chartered offshore service vessels, called MARVs – an adaptive research vessel model developed by Global Oceans.

The joint effort will engage directly with scientists in several disciplines that utilize seafloor cores in their research to identify and align the technical requirements for this application of the SFDs. The Fugro SFDs integrate proven drilling technology with ROV robotics and telemetry whereby the SFD sits on the seafloor at up to 4,000 meters of water depth, and is controlled from the deck of the vessel.

The SFD’s functional capacity and maximum operational depth provide several advantages in obtaining cores up to 150 meters in length, which is intermediate between deeper cores obtained from ship-based drill rigs with large derricks; and shorter coring in the range of 10-40 meters available with gravity and piston cores. The intermediate-range afforded by the SFDs opens up a greater expanse of the seafloor for scientific coring, to support work in paleoclimate research, sub-seafloor microbial research, geophysics and other areas.

Global Oceans and Fugro will be working with the science community in the US and worldwide through workshops and symposia to map scientific requirements onto the SFD technology and to align the use of the seafloor drills with new research projects.

About Fugro:

Fugro is the world’s leading, independent provider of geo-intelligence and asset integrity solutions for large constructions, infrastructure and natural resources. We collect data on topography, soil composition and environmental conditions, both onshore and offshore. We organize the acquired data and add value through processing, interpretation and visualization. In addition, we provide geo-related design, asset inspection and integrity advice.  Our services play a critical role in the entire lifecycle of our clients’ construction and infrastructure projects.

Fugro works around the globe, predominantly in energy and infrastructure markets, employing approximately 12,000 employees in around 60 countries. In 2015 Fugro’s revenue amounted to around EUR 2.4 billion. Fugro is listed on Euronext Amsterdam.
